Road Death Toll Rises

The deadly road toll from accidents in Northern Ireland has now reached a total of 104 people.

A 17-year-old boy was killed in a road accident in Co Londonderry as he went to pick up friends for a school formal event

Eamonn McIntyre died in a collision between his car and a lorry on Boleran Road, near Garvagh, at 6pm on Wednesday.

A girl who was with him was taken to hospital, but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The formal, at the Tullyglass House Hotel, for pupils at Loreto College in Coleraine, was called off.

Police in Coleraine have asked anyone who witnessed the accident on the Boleran Road between a blue Iveco lorry and a white Vauxhall Zafira to contact them.

Meanwhile, in Co Antrim, a 39-year-old female pedestrian was taken to hospital yesterday after she was hit by a car on the Belmont Road, in Antrim town.

Her condition is serious. The female driver of the car involved was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

The pre-Christmas road toll is all the more poignant as it has been driven up in recent weeks by a series of accidents, including one single incident in which four police officers died and three other people also lost their lives in other crashes over a single weekend at the end of November.
