Army Recruit Found Hanged At Barracks
A 29-year-old man has been found hanged at an Army camp in Surrey, it has emerged.
The Army recruit, who has not been named, died just before 8am on Sunday morning, despite attempts by the ambulance service, to resuscitate him.
The man was a recruit from Alexander Barracks at Pirbright Army camp, Surrey.
Local police have announced they have launched an inquiry to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman said: "It is with deep sadness that the MoD confirms the death of a new recruit at Pirbright Training Centre in Surrey on 21 September 2008.
"Next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and sympathies are with the deceased individual's family and friends at this difficult time.
"Surrey Police are conducting an investigation so it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."
The coroner has been informed of the incident and a post mortem is due to take place later today.
Pirbright is close to Deepcut barracks where four young soldiers died in separate shooting incidents between 1995 and 2002.
Inquests recorded a verdict of suicide in one of those deaths and open verdicts for the other three.
The families of the dead soldiers have continued to call for a public inquiry despite an independent review in 2006 which concluded the deaths were probably self-inflicted.
Earlier this year the MOD announced that Deepcut is to close after a decision was taken to sell the site to consolidate the army’s training centres, though the closure is not expected for five years.
