NI Environment Minister Questions CO2 Effects

Newly appointed Stormont environment minister, Sammy Wilson, has drew criticism for his cynical views on climate change, less than 48 hours after taking office.

Mr Wilson has said he is sceptical that all climate change is caused by CO2 emissions.

The DUP minister said: "I am not convinced and I don't think that there is any firm evidence to show that all of that climate change is due to CO2 emissions."

Environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth, have already questioned Mr Wilson's appointment.

But Mr Wilson has pledged to do a good job.

"As minister for the environment I've got a duty to ensure that there's a good balance set between the need to develop our economy, to provide homes, factories, roads etc and at the same time to protect the environment," said the DOE minister.

"I think we have to make sure we do not allow the agenda for NI to be dominated by the people who can sometimes be described as green fanatics," added Mr Wilson.

Meanwhile, the minister has reaffirmed his belief that nuclear power could provide an answer to Northern Ireland's energy needs.

Mr Wilson has also said reform of the planning system will be a top priority in his new role.
