Car provides fresh clue in Milly Dowler murder
A red car has provided police with a fresh lead in the investigation into the murder of schoolgirl Amanda 'Milly' Dowler.
Surrey police have launched an appeal for information regarding a red N-registration Daewoo Nexia, which was spotted on CCTV footage near where the 13-year-old schoolgirl disappeared.
Milly was last seen walking home from school shortly after 4pm on March 21 2002. She had left the Walton-on-Thames railway station and was reportedly heading past the junction at Copenhagen Way.
The red Daewoo Nexia that police are trying to trace was spotted in the same area, around Copenhagen Way and Station Avenue, just after 4:30pm.
Milly's body was discovered six months after her disappearance in Yately Heath Woods in Hampshire.
Police have said that the CCTV footage has been in their possession for the last three years, but had it had only been released now because the police had details of the car they were looking for. It has also been reported that the FBI helped to enhance images of the car from the footage, in order to help with the inquiry.
Police working on the Milly Dowler murder investigation are also believed to have been working with detectives investigating the murders of French student Amelie Delagrange and another student Marsha McDonnell.
However, Milly's murder has not been formally linked to the other cases.
Police are seeking to speak to anyone who owns a red Daewoo Nexia and was in the area where Milly disappeared or anyone who saw the same car near the area where Milly's body was discovered.
