International Funds Discussed In US

The question of securing future funding for the long-running International Fund for Ireland (IFI) was discussed this week in the USA.

Stormont Junior Minister Robin Newton held discussions in Washington DC with US Congressman Richie Neal on the importance of the IFI projects for NI.

Following his visit to the US last week, the DUP MLA said: "The International Fund for Ireland has played a hugely significant role in developing peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

"Its continued existence is vital if we are to sustain the peace and stability that the people of Northern Ireland currently enjoy.

"Congressman Neal has long been a supporter of the Funds work, his influence and backing is vital if we are to secure future funding during these difficult economic times.

"I have brought to Congressman Neal's attention a recent review on the Fund's work undertaken by Deloitte.

"The report was extremely positive and underscored the need for continued financial assistance to ensure the development of peace and reconciliation here," the east Belfast politician said.

"I believe that the current US administration is fully supportive of our position regarding the fund and the importance of its continued existence, however it is vital that we secure the support of Congress.

"I particularly welcome that Congressman Neal and Congressman Peter King have both agreed to forward the reports findings to their colleagues on Capitol Hill in order to raise awareness of the Funds important work.

"The First Minister and Deputy First Minister will also be raising the issue with some of the US's most senior politicians during St Patrick's week," he revealed.
