Wounded Co Antrim Soldier Back In UK
A soldier from Co Antrim has been shot and wounded in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan.
As reported exclusively on 'News Blackout' Over NI Soldier's Injuries last night, the soldier, who is in his early 20s and from Newtownabbey, was wounded in the stomach when a weapon was accidentally discharged.
After the incident the soldier had emergency surgery at Camp Bastion last Wednesday, but has since been flown back to the UK. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has declined to comment on the circumstances.
The news comes soon after Royal Irish Regiment Ranger David Dalzell, 20, from Bangor was killed in an 'operational accident' while serving in Helmand Province almost two weeks ago with no more details of the accident being made available until after the inquest.
At the weekend, two soldiers serving with the Royal Logistic Corps were killed in what is believed to have been a domestic fire.
The MoD said in a statement that the men - based at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan - hadn't died as a result of enemy action - but in a tragic accidential blaze.
Meanwhile, commenting on the latest injury to a local serviceman, the DUP councillor for Newtownabbey Nigel Hamilton said: "In any theatre of conflict the risk of being caught in friendly fire always exists."
Newtownabbey Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell said: "For those who serve in the Armed Forces there is always the risk of injury and it is particularly bad if this arises as the result of an accident or so called friendly fire.
"As an internal investigation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment in detail," he continued.
