Belfast man dies in train accident
An elderly man from Belfast has died after being involved in a train accident in the Republic of Ireland.
The man died after falling underneath the 1800 Enterprise service as it left Connolly Station in Dublin on Sunday.
A spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann, Ireland's national train operator, said that the man had attempted to quickly board the train after it had been waved clear to leave the platform. The man was caught in a door and dragged along a section of the platform. A station employee who saw what was happening tried to free him but he could not prevent the man from falling through the gap between the carriage and the platform.
The train was halted and the emergency services arrived a short time later. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Belfast-bound passengers were transferred onto another train that departed about an hour after the incident occurred.
Iarnrod are conducting an internal investigation into the accident and a member of staff has received counselling over the incident.
