Visitor Centre makes “vital contribution” to Creggan area

The An Creagán Visitor Centre in Creggan has officially opened its new entrance, interpretative exhibition and craft shop.

The Centre, which is located in the foothills of the Sperrin mountains, has been described as an important part of the regeneration of the Creggan area. Managed by Mid Ulster Enterprises (Creggan Ltd), An Creagán was opened by representatives of the agencies involved in funding the Centre, which include the Special EU Programmes Body, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Environment and Heritage Service and the Northern Ireland Tourist Boards.

The Centre is host to an interpretative exhibition that incorporates video shows, interactive displays and a collection of artefacts, while the provision of new seminar/classroom facilities will enable greater utilisation of the An Creagán as an educational resource.

Speaking at the launch, John McKinney, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body, commented: “Funding from the Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties of Ireland (Peace I) has helped to put An Creagán on the map. The £147,000 package has built a new access route and entrance which will create a higher profile and attract new visitors.

“Furthermore, the unique heritage and environment of this region will be greatly aided by the new facilities and will play an important role in the understanding and conservation of this significant archaeological and environmental resource.”

Kevin Baird, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for Northern Ireland, added: “This project demonstrates the vital contribution heritage makes to our lives today.”
