'Inadequate' Links To NI Airport, Says MLA

A south Antrim Assembly man has claimed Northern Ireland's "invaluable" international airport is marred by poor transport links.

Ulster Unionist Danny Kinahan (pictured here with UU party leader, Sir Reg Empey) said the Regional Development Minister was aware of the inadequacies in links into the city, to the M2 and M1.

"While the International Airport has the necessary capacity, and indeed is the favoured airport for many across this island - as acknowledged by the Minister - it is being severely limited by its transport links," said Mr Kinahan.

"Statistics show that the Moira Road is as busy as the A8 and A6 - both of which are being dualled at the moment. Something must be done to support this vital amenity."

Minister Conor Murphy previously said an airport rail link along the existing Crumlin line was not an option, as it requires passenger numbers of 9.5m.

Mr Kinahan said at present the numbers are sitting at 5.5m.

"But realistically how can we really increase passenger numbers when the necessary transport links simply aren't there?

He continued: "We must think laterally on this issue - perhaps commercial airlines might consider sharing in the cost of developing the transport infrastructure? Avenues such as private/public partnerships really must be explored.

"This is a long-term investment which will pay dividends both in terms of tourism and business, and we cannot be waylaid by ministerial shoulder-shrugging."
