Burns Calls For Housing Funding

All parties at Stormont should unite to ensure housing is a priority, an SDLP MLA has said.

Thomas Burns called on all Assembly members to put pressure on Finance Minister Sammy Wilson to release more funds.

Speaking after an SDLP amendment asking the Social Development Minister to review rather than remove the suspension of home improvement grants, Mr Burns said it was impossible for Minister Margaret Ritchie to spend money that was not there.

"The SDLP recognise the importance of home improvement grants," he said.

"However, the fact of the matter is that the Minister cannot simply remove their suspension because that would mean spending money that is not there."

Mr Burns welcomed Minister Ritchie's assurance and Sinn Féin’s acceptance of the SDLP amendment asking for a review of the suspension.

"It is clear there is no lack of will on the Minister’s behalf but housing needs to be put on a sound financial footing," said Mr Burns.

"There was a £100m shortfall in the housing budget which urgently needs addressed. We welcome the extra £20m made available, albeit with conditions attached, in June, but much more is needed."

He added: "Therefore, it is vitally important that all parties in the Executive unite in putting pressure on the Finance Minister to make as much extra money available for housing maintenance and improvements."
