Goggins Announces Publication Of Policing Book
Minister of State Paul Goggins has announced that the British and Irish governments are supporting the production of a book to mark the tenth anniversary of the publication of the Report of the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland.
The book will reflect on the work of the Commission, the implementation of the Report and its relevance for contemporary international debates on policing and security sector reform in post-conflict societies.
It is intended to be a practical resource that will be of interest to practitioners and students of policing. The publication is planned for spring 2010.
The Minister said: "I am delighted to support this endeavour by the Royal Irish Academy, marking the tenth anniversary of the Patten report. This book will reflect on the work of the Commission, and the implementation of its report, focusing on the important lessons learned for policing, both here in Northern Ireland and around the world.
"Ten years on the Patten reforms remain the gold standard for transparent, accountable and progressive policing internationally. The responsible Chief Constables, Sir Ronnie Flanagan and Sir Hugh Orde, showed exceptional leadership and drive in implementing this challenge reform programme, while still maintaining the police service's focus on delivering an excellent policing service for the people of Northern Ireland.
"The book will look at the reforms from a range of perspectives and it is testament to the work of Chris Patten and the Commission that, after a decade, their work continues to shape the international debate on policing."
