Racism will not be tolerated in the health service
"We must recognise that we live in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society," the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety Bairbre de Brún has said.
Speaking at the launch for consultation of Racial Equality in Health – Good Practice Guide, on Monday Ms de Brún it was important to realise that minority communities can sometimes have difficulties when accessing services.
The Good Practice Guide aimed at helping health and social service staff recognise the particular health needs of black and minority ethnic communities was developed in partnership with the Equality Commission.
The Minister also launching an anti-racist poster to be circulated to hospitals and doctors surgeries, as part of an Ireland-wide drive against racism.
Ms de Brún said: "These events will, I hope, send out a strong message to people in all parts of Ireland that racism in any shape or form will simply not be tolerated in the health and social services, be it against patients, clients or employees."
Joan Harbison, Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission, said that she was pleased the Good Practice Guide was being launched as part of the events surrounding European Week against Racism.
“This consultation provides an opportunity for black and minority ethnic groups to tell of their own experience dealing with health services and to make sure that the final version of the Guide truly reflects their needs,” she said.
