Crews Attacked At Courthouse Blaze

Firefighters have came under attack in north Belfast, while extinguishing the third blaze at Crumlin Road courthouse over the weekend.

The historic building has been the target of three separate arson incidents in the past three days.

Last night, crews attending a small fire were pelted with stones by youths in the area.

In March this year, the listed site was gutted by a major fire, which was eventually put out by ten fire crews.

The latest spate of attacks have been condemned by local representatives.

Closed in 1998, the courthouse was the setting for hundreds of trials throughout the Troubles.

It appeared its fortunes had changed when in 2006 developer, and current Policing Board chair, Barry Gilligan announced plans to transform the structure into a luxury city hotel.

He purchased the building for the nominal sum of £1.

Sir Charles Lanyon, who designed the architect for the Grade B listed building, was renowned for his work throughout the city. His other landmark structures include City Hall, Custom House, Belfast Castle and Queen's University.
