Sectarian violence flares at north Belfast interface

A number of police officers have been injured by missiles during clashes between rival mobs at a sectarian interface in north Belfast.

One of the officers needed hospital treatment after police moved in to quell localized riots on the Limestone Road on Tuesday April 2, the scene of almost nightly violence between nationalist and loyalist youths.

A police spokesman said the fighting lasted around an hour and added that officers fired one plastic bullet when they were attacked with bricks, bottles and masonry.

However, loyalist community leaders claimed the officers fired five plastic bullets in the Tigers Bay area and accused the police of heavy-handed tactics. They also claimed a number of people received head injuries after police batons struck them during the disturbances.

The latest trouble follows video footage, released by Sinn Féin, which allegedly shows two Catholic mothers and a Sinn Féin councillor being beaten with batons by riot squad officers.

The tape has been sent to the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman’s office.
