Solar energy receives development boost
New measures designed to boost the development of the UK photovoltaic industry have been revealed by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt.
The Minister, who was speaking at the opening of the BedZed Project - an award-winning solar-powered housing initiative in South London - revealed a variety of measures, which include £20 million for a new Major Photovoltaic (PV) Demonstration Project to further stimulate both residential and commercial applications. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has also allocated an extra £1 million to the current round of field trials.
BP, who managed the installation of a 108 kilowatt PV system in the BedZed Project, welcomed the announcement, with Bob Dudley, BP Group Vice President for Renewables, describing the incentives as "a very real stimulus" to the PV market in the UK.
Mr Dudley went on to state that BP would continue to support the promotion of solar power in the UK, by providing financial support for a feasibility study on installer accreditation and a long-term photovoltaic research programme at Imperial College.
BP is one of the world's largest manufacturers of photovoltaic equipment, and one of the largest private sector consumers of solar power.
