Irish Guards accompany Queen Mother’s funeral procession

Members of the Irish Guards accompanied the Queen Mother’s coffin from the Queen’s Chapel to Westminster Hall on Friday, as it made its way through London.

The procession, which witnessed levels of pageantry not seen since the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965, formally saw Queen Elizabeth receive her mother’s coffin following a military ceremonial procession which brought the city to a respectful standstill.

Eight pallbearers from the Irish Guards carried the Queen Mother’s coffin into Westminster Abbey, where it will lie in state until Tuesday's funeral.

The youngest Irish Guard pallbearer is Guardsman Robert Fleming from Ballyclare in Northern Ireland. He was celebrating his 18th birthday at home in County Antrim when he got the call to return to London to help carry the Queen Mother’s coffin into Westminster Abbey.

Irish Guards flanked the coffin before it left St James’s Palace on a Royal Artillery gun carriage during the spectacular royal procession on Friday April 5. Irish Guards will also keep watch as the Queen Mother lies in state.

The regiment has traditionally been associated with the Queen Mother who was born the same year as it was founded. Each Saint Patrick’s Day the men of the regiment were presented with a shamrock as a personal gift from her.

She first presented it in person in 1965 and barely missed a year from then until 2000 when she was unable to make the presentation due to her failing health.
