EasyJet report increase in passenger numbers

No frills airline, EasyJet has reported an increase in passenger numbers for March.

The company said, on Monday April 8, that it had carried 839,472 passengers in March, up 39 per cent up on the same period last year. In the same period its 'load factor' - the number of seats sold as a percentage of total capacity - rose to just under 86 per cent from 82.6 per cent in March 2001.

Monday's figure's provided further evidence that the airline is leading the way out of the sharp downturn that hit the European air travel industry after September 11.

Budget airlines such as Easyjet and Ireland-based rival Ryanair escaped the worst of the post-11 September slump thanks to aggressive discounting.

These latest figures from Easyjet come as the company is currently in discussions with aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus over the purchase of up to 75 new aircraft.
