Belfast Man Lifts Top Garda College Award

Top marks have gone to a student garda from Belfast today as he took his place with 270 other new officers at police graduations in Dublin.

Dermot Ahern, the Irish Minister for Justice, presented certificates to 79 female and 192 male Gardaí at the ceremony at the Garda College, Templemore.

The top Commissioner’s Medal - awarded to the student achieving the highest aggregate marks in academic subjects - was won by Garda James Clarke, a native of Belfast.

He will now be stationed at Carrickmacross Garda Station - close to the Northern Ireland border.

Meanwhile, Garda Raymond Moloney a native of Martinstown, Co Limerick, was awarded the Gary Sheehan Memorial Medal, which commemorates a recruit garda who was killed on duty in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, in December, 1983.

This prize is awarded to the best all-round Student. Garda Moloney will be attached to Terenure Garda Station.

The Templemore Town Council Medal, for outstanding achievement and appreciation in the area of social science studies, was presented to Garda Kieran Murphy, a native of Cork City, and who will be stationed at Bandon Garda Station.

Ballymena Student Scoops National Career Academy UK Award
Jordan Hunter, a student from Northern Regional College (NRC), Ballymena, has won the 'Sir Winfried Bischoff' Student of the Year Award from the Career Academies UK programme. Jordan, who attends NRC's Engineering Career Academy, became the overall UK winner at the national finals in London in May.

A unique healthcare tool created at the University of Ulster has secured a second major prize inside a month for its inventors. Lesley-Ann Black, a PhD student in the Faculty of Engineering at UU, developed Di@l-log, a software solution which collates and monitors key disease indicators for Type 2 Diabetes.

A University of Ulster student whose research directly influenced the current role of the Children’s Commisioner for Northern Ireland, Nigel Williams, last night scooped a Science Shop Award.

North Belfast student wins national award
Northern Ireland student, Lyra McKee, has beaten off competition from across the UK to win a prestigious journalism award. 16-year-old Lyra, a former student at St Gemma's High School, won the Sky Young Journalist Award 2006, for an article examining the issue of suicide in north Belfast.

Gardaí Make Arrest In Co Cork Shooting Probe
Gardaí investigating a Co Cork murder last year have made an arrest. They arrested a 29-year-old as yet unnamed male at 10.30am this morning in connection with the death of David Brett at Foyle, Ballydesmond, on 21st May, 2007. The man is being detained at Bandon Garda Station and is detained under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939.
