BT extends high-speed Broadband to NI customers
BT has announced that it will soon be able to offer high speed broadband communications to thousands more businesses and households throughout Northern Ireland.
The announcement is part of a national, multi million pound initiative to install ADSL at a further 100 UK exchanges by the end of May.
Once completed, 1,110 exchanges across the UK will be able to offer ADSL services to 16 million households, more than two thirds of the UK population.
Londonderry is to be one of the first equipped with the latest ADSL broadband technology with two exchanges, Foyle and Waterside, being upgraded.
The two Londonderry exchanges due to receive the new equipment currently have a total of 7,000 business and 18,500 residential connections.
Members of Derry’s business and civic community have welcomed the BT announcement. Richard Sterling, Chairman of the Focus Group said it would encourage more businesses to access broadband telecommunications. He added: “The enabling of two exchanges in the city for ADSL is an important step in providing wider access for local business to affordable broadband telecommunications.
"Both the Council and the Chamber of Commerce are committed to implementing a programme of actions to ensure that North West businesses are able to benefit fully from opportunities provided by this digital investment."
The introduction of ADSL increases the capacity of homes and companies to transmit information at 40 times the speed of normal modems and makes the process of doing business via the World Wide Web, corporate intranets and any digital information more accessible.
