West Tyrone MLA's home is attacked
The home of an SDLP assembly member for west Tyrone was attacked last night.
Two cars outside the home of Eugene McMenamin were destroyed in the incident which took place in the early hours of the morning.
A shaken Mr McMenamin said he was relieved that his house had not caught alight in the blaze.
He added: "I am disgusted by this attack on my home and my family. The cars belonging to my family have been completely destroyed and we were lucky that the house itself did not catch fire while we were asleep inside. This is the second time that my home has been attacked, and the responsibility for this clearly lies with those who wish to replace the state authority with their own brand of intimidation."
The attack on the McMenamin family home come just days after he issued a strong statement in support of the SDLP's position on policing.
Mr McMenamin said that he had recently spoken out "strongly in favour of the SDLP's position and had been severely criticised by another party for doing so".
He added: "I will not be silenced by attacks in the press or by attacks on my home. The SDLP will continue to lead the community in the new beginning for policing, and whoever carried out this attack is clearly upset by our position."
MrMcMenamin said that the days of violently attacking one's opponents should be left behind: "dialogue, not intimidation is the way forward".
