Fewer Irish Women Seeking Abortions

The number of women travelling from the Republic of Ireland to the UK and the Netherlands for abortions is falling, the latest figures have revealed.

The statistics emerged soon after parallel figures were released by the Department of Health which showed that the number of women travelling from addresses in Northern Ireland to England for an abortion also fell in 2008. They dropped to 1,173 from 1,343 in 2007.

The Irish Republic's data - released by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency - showed that 4,600 women attending abortion clinics in the UK last year who gave an address in Ireland.

This is compared to 4,686 in 2007.

Meanwhile, the number of women from Ireland travelling to abortion clinics in the Netherlands also dropped to 331 last year, from 451 in 2007.

The Irish Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has made a commitment to allow Northern Irish women to access abortion services in Ireland. Minister Harris made the commitment during his appearance at Feile an Phobail in Belfast. Abortion was legalised in Britain in 1967, but remains illegal in Northern Ireland.

Two Women Working In Café In Belfast Win Equal Pay Claim
Two women working at a café in Belfast have won an equal pay claim. Paulina Paczkowska and Agnieszka Anna Golygowska both worked as floor staff- cum-baristas in the Avoca Café. While they had been doing the same work as a male colleague since May 2013, the male colleague had always received a significantly higher rate of pay.

Police Launch Investigation Following Arson Attack
Police have launched an investigation following an arson attack on a house in west Belfast on Wednesday. Two women, aged 61 and 23, and three children were in the property at the time, however they were not injured. Accelerant was poured through the letterbox and set on fire at around 10.30pm.

NI Women Will Soon Be Able To Access Abortions In Ireland
The Irish Health Minister has confirmed that new legislation is being introduced to allow women from Northern Ireland to access abortion services in the Republic of Ireland. Simon Harris said he believed his government had a responsibility to provide the service. Abortion is currently illegal in Northern Ireland in all but the most extreme cases.

NI Baby Boom Continues
There was a total of 25,600 'live births' registered in Northern Ireland last year, 1,200 (5%) more than in 2007 and the highest number recorded since 1991. The latest rise is the sixth consecutive annual increase, with births having increased by 10% since 2006 and by 20% since the 2002 low.
