Details of Queen’s Jubilee visit to NI revealed

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Dr John Reid has announced that the Queen is to visit Northern Ireland from May 13-15 this year.

Her Majesty will be accompanied during the visit by her husband Prince Philip and is scheduled to attend a garden party at Hillsborough Castle and Loughry College.

The Queen will also attend a service to mark her Golden Jubilee at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast and undertake a number of other engagements across Northern Ireland.

She last visited the province in November 2001 when she toured a number of towns during a one-day visit.

There was speculation following the visit that the Queen would visit Dublin. However, it is believed any planned visit would probably be after the Golden Jubilee Year.

If such an event were to go ahead, it would be the first state visit to the Republic of Ireland by a reigning British monarch since the country achieved independence 80 years ago. (AMcE)
