Police treat knife attack as sectarian
The police say they are treating a knife attack on a man in Londonderry as sectarian.
The victim, who is in his early 20s, was sitting in his car when he heard a noise at the rear of the vehicle at about 9.30pm on Thursday April 11.
The man got out of his car and was confronted by two masked men. He was struck with a baseball bat and then stabbed in the arm. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Police said they believed the attack was sectarian due to the nature of the comments were made during the attack in Victoria Road.
The SDLP assembly member for the area Annie Courtney has condemned the attack.
“This is a terrible attack on a young man. I have spoken to the police who have informed me that they believe the attack was sectarian," she said.
"There is no doubt that he is lucky to be alive. I have also spoken to the young man’s family who are obviously upset and distressed by what has happened. I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed the attack to give that information to the police. I would also say to people in the area to be vigilant.” (AMcE)
