Consignia request 1p increase for first and second class stamps

Consignia has set out its proposals to introduce “more competition into the mail market and raise customer service to record levels”.

Part of the plan by the struggling state-owned UK postal service is to request for a one-penny increase in the price of stamps. The company said this would help towards the £170 million a year needed to fund investment in a "renewal plan".

Consignia revealed that since 1993, the price of a basic First Class stamp has increased by just over seven per cent. Their proposal for a 1p/1p rise in First and Second Class postage at the earliest opportunity "will help fund investment that will deliver efficiency improvements in the longer term and quality of service improvements".

Consignia presently loses an average of 1p delivering every letter bearing a 27p first class stamp. The proposed price rise could see the company at least breaking even on first class deliveries, but would be unlikely to make a major impact on losses of £1.5 million a day across the company. (MB)
