Newcastle Named 'Tidiest Town'
Newcastle, Co Down, has been named Ireland's best kept town from hundreds of contenders.
The seaside resort recently underwent a massive multi-million pound regeneration project, which has completely transformed its popular promenade and coastal walk. As part of the £3m public realm scheme roads were re-aligned, footpaths upgraded, and street lighting and furniture increased.
Welcoming the Tidy Town awards, Stephen Peover, Department of Environment Permanent Secretary, said: "Taking part in the competition encourages communities to put aside any differences and work together to improve their local environment. New friendships are formed and healthy competition abounds."
Northern Ireland Amenity Council President Doreen Muskett said she was delighted for Newcastle and other winners, including Loughgall, Ennis and Glenties.
"Judging is never an easy task when you are comparing the best towns and villages across Ireland, but there is a very healthy and good natured spirit of competition among the entrants," she said.
