Jobs Under Threat In Food Industry
A report on the food and drink industry has said thousands of jobs are at risk in the sector.
The new report, called closing the gap, said that already this year up to 2,000 jobs have already been lost, and similar losses are to follow.
According to Central Statistics Office figures, food sales fell by 3.5% last month as retail profits continue to decline.
However, the report also claims key problems in the industry include business costs such as energy, which is 20% higher in Ireland than the average paid across the EU.
According to the industry, the sector employs 46,000 people directly and 60,000 people in distribution and other services total employment linked to the sector standing at almost 230,000.
The report argues for new and special financial supports for companies selling into the UK.
The report also said the recent currency shifts have hurt the sector.
A spokesman said: "With 43% of food exports going to the UK, sterling has
fallen in value by 30%. Supports are needed as a matter of urgency for enterprises exposed to such crippling currency movements.
"The Government should seek approval from the EU commission to set aside state aid rules and provide grant aid to companies to assist them put in place productivity enhancing measures."

Stormont Plan To Boost Construction Jobs
The building trade is to enjoy a boost with news this week that the Stormont Executive has agreed on the Programme for Government (PfG). In a statement from the NI Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland, it emerged that both upgrading of existing homes and the building of news ones are planned as part of the wide ranging strategy.
