French Jobs For Dundalk
A major online retail company based in France, CDiscount is to set up its regional headquarters for the UK and Ireland at the IDA Business and Technology Park in Dundalk.
The move is good news for Co Louth as the decision will create 50 new jobs over the next two years.
CDiscount is the online trading arm of Groupe Casino of France, one of the world's largest retailers with global revenues of over €28.7 billion.
Groupe Casino's retail brands include Monoprix, Casino Supermarkets, Libertad, Big C and Leaderprice. It has more than 10,000 stores and operates in Europe, South America, North America and Asia.
It employs more than 200,000 people in 15 countries.
Meanwhile, a private hospital operators, Sheehan Medical, has also said that the new €90m private hospital at the City Gate development in Cork will bring 675 jobs to the region.
It will be the first new private hospital facility to open in the city for 30 years. The deal has been signed with John Cleary Developments to be the anchor tenant in their new City Gate development in Mahon.
Around 150 new jobs will be created during fit out and 350 new positions will be advertised to run the hospital, which will also have 75 doctors on site with 100 ancillary staff.
It will have the capacity to offer over 39,000 patient treatments per year.

220 jobs are to be axed at the potash mine in Boulby, near Middlesbrough, Unite the union which has about 800 members at the UK's deepest mine, said this was more disastrous news for the regional economy, following hard on the heels of the announcement by SSI Redcar that it was to axe about 2,200 jobs at Redcar.

Tata Steel To Axe 250 Jobs
Unite the union has called for government action to help Britain's steel industry as Tata Steel announced it would be mothballing its Llanwern steel mill with the loss of 250 jobs. The job losses follow last month's announcement by Tata Steel to cut over 680 jobs in Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Birmingham City Council To Cut Over 6,000 Jobs Over Four Years
Government cuts were blamed for Birmingham City Council's decision to axe a further 6,000 jobs in the next four years. Unite, which represents over 1,000 employees at the city council, said that this was "a savage blow" not just for the hardworking council workforce, but for the million people that rely on its services.
