Newtownards Murder Probed

A 35-year-old man is being held by detectives following a murder in Newtownards last night.

The body of a 26-year-old Polish man was found at a house in the Balfour Street area of the Co Down town at around 10.30pm. Police said a 35-year-old man, also a Polish national, has been arrested in connection with the death, and is currently assisting officers with their inquiries.

An appeal has been made for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have information about the incident, to contact detectives.

Local DUP councillor Jonathan Bell said the "tightly knit" community was "absolutely traumatised" by the death.

"People are very much numb, very sad. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with the family.

"They're hard working families, decent people, are just shocked that this has happened within their own local area."
