Phoenix supports fight against fuel poverty

Peter Dixon, Phoenix Chief Executive Officer, has welcomed the Department of Social Development’s draft Housing Bill and General Consumer Council (GCC) recommendations.

Mr Dixon revealed that more than 600 people die each year as a result of fuel poverty, and was a problem which businesses, local communities and government would have to address together.

He added: "Phoenix has long held fuel poverty as a key business priority and the Department's draft Housing Bill and the recent GCC report 'Frozen Out' have moved things another step forward.

"The arrival of Phoenix in Northern Ireland has given people a choice on fuel. Every six minutes of each working day another home is converting to natural gas and its controllability and efficiency is benefiting more than 40,000 customers

"In support of the government Warm Homes Scheme, Phoenix has developed its own 'Affordable Warmth Strategy'. This year 1,000 homes in the natural gas licensed area who do not directly have a central heating system and are not in receipt of benefits, can apply to have a room heater supplied and installed free of charge as part of Phoenix's Room Heater Replacement Scheme.

“The GCC also highlighted the huge success of the Beechmount and Willowfield projects, with some residents showing a weekly reduction in heating bills from £17 to £6 with the use of natural gas."

This year's Gas Industry Conference, to be held in May, sponsored by Phoenix and themed 'Affordable energy on your doorstep', will see more than 300 leading Northern Ireland businesses and energy companies come together to combine their efforts to combat this serious issue of fuel poverty, with contributions from Phoenix, the Energy Savings Trust and Northern Ireland Electricity.
