Teen Arrested As Man fights For Life After Assault

A 21-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 16-year-old who was arrested by police has since been charged with grievous bodily harm. He is due to appear in court in Omagh next Wednesday, June 17.

The attack took place at Scarffes Entry, off the Omagh main street, shortly before 4am. The assaulted man is thought to have suffered head injuries after being felled by a blow.

A spokesman for the hospital said yesterday he remained in a critical condition.

The vice-chair of Omagh District Council, Josephine Deehan, said she was deeply concerned by the incident and called on the police to step up their patrols at weekends.

The victim was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

A PSNI spokeswoman confirmed that the incident was not being treated as a hate crime.

Detectives in Omagh have asked for witnesses or anyone who can help with their inquiries to contact them.
