Wildlife Conservation Charity Urges Introduction Of Marine Bill
One of the largest wildlife conservation charities in Europe, RSPB, has warned about the importance of taking action against the filth in the seas around Northern Ireland.
RSPB's Northern Ireland conservation manager, Dr James Robinson, said the rich marine life of the region - over half of Northern Irish wildlife is found in the sea - is being put "under serious pressure."
For that reason, the charity has asked the Assembly to urgently establish a Marine Bill to assure the sustainable use of the seas and help to preserve the sea wildlife.
Dr Robinson said that the lack of a unified approach is already impacting on economic, recreational and environmental interests.
He also remarked that the rest of the UK has published laws to save sea life. "So once again the people of Northern Ireland are being short-changed when it comes to environment", he said.
Citizens can also help by avoiding throwing litter to the sea. "Our message this year is when you go to sea this summer keep the litter under control," said Dr Robinson.
He added: "Marine litter is something that is under our immediate control. Marine life often gets tangled in litter and this can lead to a slow and painful death."
