'Playground Test' proves Fruitful for local textile company

North-west based textile manufacturer, Fruit of the Loom has just completed its most innovative control test in the company's history, using local schoolchildren!

To supplement their rigorous laboratory tests, Fruit of the Loom asked 40 pupils from Drumahoe Primary School in Derry to put their famous sweatshirts through their paces - with the end results benefiting schoolchildren everywhere.

With the school uniform market accounting for a significant portion of Fruit of the Loom sweatshirts sold each year, the company wanted to access if its products were meeting its high standards on durability. As laboratory tests were not highlighting any major problems, fabric technologist Ray Wright decided to go straight to the market to see how the garments fared under more 'realistic' conditions.

After the eight-week trial period, the sweatshirts were collected, replaced with new ones and the results were fully analysed.

Ray Wright said: "This is the most comprehensive wear trial we have conducted and the results have been very useful. We can use this type of information to help in the development of more durable fabric, suitable for this type of 'heavy duty' wear. It has been a very informative exercise and we envisage using this process again in the future."

Mr McMaster, headmaster of Drumahoe Primary School was happy to help Fruit of the Loom in this unique project, he added: "It is vitally important that school uniforms are practical, comfortable and durable. We were delighted that our pupils and parents have played a key role in this important initiative which is helping one of our local industries deliver an even better product to schoolchildren through the British Isles."
