Titanic Fans Call For Belfast Memorial To Be Relocated
The Belfast Titanic Society is suggesting moving the Titanic memorial sculpture to a different location, because the Belfast wheel currently obscures it.
This decision comes after the last meeting of the Strategic Policy and Resources committee, in which City councillors voted in favour of requesting and approving to extend the period of operation for the Belfast wheel in the ground of the City Hall.
The period of the wheel's stay would exceed 24 months, if the Planning Service approves it. That would mean that the memorial will be hidden in 2011, during the centenary of the launch of the ship, as has been complained by society spokesperson Susie Millar, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
The Belfast-based group, which is mainly integrated by past shipyard workers, has proposed to relocate the sculpture to the north eastern corner of the City Hall grounds, next to the place where the monument of Sir Edward Harland is.
The Titanic Memorial, sculpted by Thomas Brock, was originally exposed in Donegall Square North in 1920. It was moved to its current location in 1960.
