“Golden Thursday” jobs boosts for Irish Republic

Tánaiste Mary Harney proclaimed April 18 "Golden Thursday" after announcing that over 1,000 jobs are to be created in the Republic of Ireland over the next few years.

Firstly, she confirmed that Churchill Insurance Group plc, the fifth largest general insurance company in the UK, is to create 600 new jobs over the next five years in Galway.

Churchill is making a substantial investment with the support of IDA Ireland in the establishment of an additional customer interaction centre, close to its existing facility at Ballybrit Business Park. It will provide the company with additional capacity to service the growth of its current insurance businesses in the UK market, mainly motor and household insurance, and its future needs.

With the need to have the new centre up and running quickly, Churchill is to commence recruitment immediately. The new jobs will offer opportunities in a mix of skills for people with graduate and diploma qualifications and for mature workers. While the majority of positions will be for advisors to handle inbound calls, there will also be a need for supervising team leaders, business unit managers, IT support staff, HR support, trainers and quality control staff. The new centre will be housed in a 17,000 sq. ft. privately financed building which Churchill is leasing.

Mary Harney, followed this announced by revealing that Thomson NETg in Limerick, one of the world's leading providers of learning solutions to the corporate and academic markets, is to create 360 new jobs, bringing total employment at Thomson NETg in Ireland to 700 by the end of 2005.

The €12 million investment will result in the expansion of the company's e-Learning product development and innovation centre operation in Limerick and is supported by IDA Ireland.

The Tánaiste said that Thomson NETg had agreed with IDA Ireland that some of the company's activities will be located in Birr, County Offaly, as part of this expansion. Details of this are currently being finalised by the company with IDA, with a view to securing a suitable location in the town. She added that up to 80 of the new jobs could be created in this satellite operation in Birr. (MB)
