Latest Arrests In McDaid Case

A 34-year-old man has been arrested by by officers investigating the sectarian murder of Coleraine father-of-four Kevin McDaid.

Last night another man, aged 41, was released on bail pending further inquires after being held by detectives.

So far, nine men have been charged in connection with the murder of Catholic Mr McDaid (pictured) and the attempted murder of Damien Fleming, who was also set upon by a loyalist mob.

The accused, aged between 18 and 50, have all been remanded in custody.

They are alleged to have been involved in last month's violence at a Coleraine estate, which resulted in Mr McDaid dying from a brutal beating just yards from his home.

The repercussions of the attacks were felt in Stormont yesterday, with Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness attacking DUP MP Gregory Campbell's response to the incident.

Mr Campbell, who represents the East Londonderry area, and sits at the Executive table as Minister For Culture, was accused of failing to show "real leadership".

Mr McGuinness said words were not enough to ease tensions, and suggested Mr Campbell will not even speak directly to him - despite working in the same Stormont cabinet.

"I want him to show real leadership. I want him to recognise the importance of contributing in a positive and constructive way by encouraging people in the Coleraine area to engage in dialogue," said Mr McGuinness.

"And indeed, to encourage him to engage in dialogue."

Northern Ireland's two main unionist parties condemned the murder of McDaid but did not send any senior representatives to the 49-year-old's funeral on Monday.

According to the DUP, Mr Campbell had prior engagements at Stormont, however the MP called on anyone with information relating to the attacks to contract police.

A protest rally was held in Belfast city centre yesterday to demonstrate opposition at continued sectarian violence.

Several hundred people attended the event, aimed at showing solidarity with the McDaid family.
