Female Alliance Lord Mayor Mooted
The Alliance party is hotly tipped to take the chain of Belfast Lord Mayor at this evening's council meeting.
Tonight will see either the Liberal Democrat-aligned Alliance or the DUP elected to the office of first citizen.
Both parties are expected to put themselves forward for the role.
According to media reports, east Belfast Councillor and MLA Naomi Long is likely to be the Alliance candidate for the ceremonial position, which would make her only the city's second female Lord Mayor in history.
According to incumbent Sinn Fein Lord Mayor, Tom Hartly, the high office is of great signifance to the entire province.
"When Belfast is doing well, the whole region does well. We can see that, for example, in the context of the number of tourists," he said.
"We see ourselves as the gateway to the region and we have a responsibility not just to the citizens of Belfast but also to engage with other councils, mindful of our role as economic generator for both the city and the region."
