Skin Cancer Still Rising, Conference Told
The incidence of skin cancer is continuing to rise among both men and women and it is estimated that the likely cost to the NHS in the UK is around £100m per annum.
That was the message that leading health experts heard as they gathered in Lisburn today for a conference on skin cancer.
Pictured at the conference, which was held in association with the Ulster Cancer Foundation, are, from left: Dr Paddy Woods, Acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive, Ulster Cancer Foundation, Tom Crossan, Vice Chair of NIMSIG and Professor Ray Waters, Chair of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment Sunbed Sub-group.
'Skin Cancer - A Burning Issue' was organised by the Northern Ireland Melanoma Strategy Implementation Group to help develop strategies and programmes to tackle the adverse health effects of over-exposure to sunlight and sunbeds.

A leading Northern Ireland campaigner on cancer prevention and care has welcomed news of a new vaccine that will be offered to young girls nationally. Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive of the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) commented on the cervical cancer vaccine which has been recommended for an NHS immunisation programme.
