Deadly Fermanagh Bomb Found

There has been a potentially deadly twist to the latest in a series of bomb alerts that have been hitting Co Fermanagh in recent months.

The component parts of a very large bomb have been found near Rosslea.

Police have said they included about 100lbs of fertiliser - as used for mixing explosives - and were discovered by a man working on farmland on Tuesday.

The development comes around six weeks after dissident republicans warned that they had left a device on the Donagh to Rosslea road.

PSNI Chief Inspector Alwyn Barton said lives could have been lost. "Had these elements exploded, members of the public would have lost their lives."

He said the parts were also capable of causing serious injury and "widespread damage".

"They were located 125 metres from the nearest house," he said.

"This is a very strong example of how this small group of people are quite prepared to place very serious, very dangerous elements such as this close to property where people live," he said.

"They have complete disregard for the fact that if these elements had exploded members of the public would have lost their lives."

Northern Ireland remains on high alert, with a separate incident - after an object was found - sparking traffic gridlock during last night's Belfast rush hour.

The security alert was near the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and caused major disruption.

Army bomb experts were sent to examine the suspicious device found on Middlepath Street on Wednesday afternoon.

However, the police said the object, which was discovered at the base of a fly-over, was found to be "non-suspicious".
