Seaplanes Dip Their Wings Into Fermanagh Lakes

Nostalgia will be flying high later this month as the skies over Fermanagh will be taken over by seaplanes from all over Europe.

Next Sunday, May 24th, sees Waterways Ireland presenting the Fermanagh Seaplane Festival at the Share Holiday Village, near Lisnaskea, where a selection of Cessnas, Maules, and 'J3cub' aircraft from as far as Holland will wow visitors from far and wide.

Waterways Ireland and the NI Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure have played a major part in financially supporting the Fermanagh Seaplane Festival 2009.

Stormont Leisure Minister, Gregory Campbell said: "The festival combines some of the best of what Northern Ireland has to offer from history, scenery and our world renowned hospitality.

"I would like to wish the organisers every success with the event and hope all those attending enjoy the festival."

The Director of Marketing and Communications for Waterways Ireland, Martin Dennany said the Fermanagh Seaplane Festival was, 'one of the most unique events to take place on Lough Erne'.

"With the history of seaplanes in Fermanagh, Waterways Ireland is delighted to be associated with an event that will not alone celebrate this history but also provide an opportunity for visitors to become aware of the modern day facilities available on beautiful Lough Erne," he said.

Steve Powell, pilot and one of the organisers commented: "Having travelled across the world flying seaplanes I have been lucky enough to see some great flying events.

"Fermanagh is perfect for this event, and it enables visitors from all over the island of Ireland and further afield to come and see such unique aircraft.".

Families, enthusiasts, and those seeking adventure will have the chance to see the seaplanes operating in Fermanagh again, and even better, get the chance to fly in them and see Fermanagh from the air.

They can also take helicopter rides; watch the model seaplane displays and, if you're not a flyer, you can take part in the land and water based activities which Share Holiday Village provides.

There's also a WWII themed evening dinner at Share Centre (on Saturday 23rd May).

Castle Archdale, in Lower Lough Erne, was of course a major airbase for military seaplanes, essential to patrolling the Atlantic approaches to counter the very real danger of German U-boat attacks on transatlantic shipping.
