Appeal Following Carrick Paramilitary Attack
Police have appealed for information following a paramilitary style assault in Carrickfergus. A 24-year-old man was threatened and assaulted in an alleyway close to Glenfield Community Centre shortly before 1am yesterday morning.
It's believed the victim was assaulted by a number of men with pool cues. He sustained a broken nose and other facial injuries. Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area or anyone with any information relating to this incident. They can be contacted at Carrickfergus police station by calling 0845 600 8000. Alternatively anonymous information can be given to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
Five Freed In Shiels Murder Probe
The five men arrested over the murder of Londonderry man Emmet Shiels have been released by the police. Four of them were released without charge, while the other, a 33-year-old, was released pending a report to the PPS. Mr Shiels, 22, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was delivering pizzas in June 2008 when he was caught up in a row with masked gunmen and shot dead. Murder Charge Follows Fitroy Street Stab Death
The murder of Anthony Robin, 44, who was found stabbed to death at a flat in Fitzroy Avenue, close to Queen's University, in the early hours of Monday has seen a 37-year-old woman appearing in court. Belfast Magistrates Court heard Angeline Mitchell - of Lindsay Court in the Donegall Pass area of the city - charged with the murder of her partner. She was remanded in custody until a further date next week. She did not apply for bail. See: Stab Death Victim Named
Show Visitors Urged To Go Green
Visitors to the Balmoral Show are being urged to get involved in conservation in their local area. Two Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) stands make a direct appeal to farmers, parents, children and other young people to do their bit to protect nature. NIEA Chief Executive Dr Roy Ramsay explained: "Inside the Government Departments Hall, visitors can talk to NIEA staff about current and new environmental regulations. They can also browse the NetRegs website, which provides free, straightforward guidance on environmental regulations affecting the agricultural industry," he said.
Belfast Conference Focuses On Concrete
Over 50 delegates from the world of concrete manufacturers have met in Belfast to discuss innovation within the industry. The International Prestressed Hollowcore Association (IPHA) Annual conference was hosted by Toomebridge company Creagh Concrete Products Ltd. It was the first time the event had been held in Northern Ireland.
Green Jobs On The Way
The Stormont Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, has highlighted how the 'green' economy will play an important role in future jobs creation. The Minister was speaking as he visited Londonderry firm, Rural Generation, to learn about the particular skills requirements of this growing sector. This development company specialises in designing sustainable renewable energy and waste management systems using short rotation willow trees as a multifunctional tool. He met with company Chairman Dr John Gilliland, to discuss the potential for biomass production in Northern Ireland, the type of jobs likely to be required in the 'green' economy and the skills requirements for such jobs.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Simon Tang: Second Murder Charge Withdrawn
A second murder charge over the killing of Chinese restaurateur Simon Tang in 1996 has been withdrawn. Belfast Magistrates' Court has heard the case against Paul Allen will not proceed. Mr Allen, 39, of Drumhoy Drive, Carrickfergus, faced charges over the murder of Simon Tang. Mr Tang was a married father of two.

Shot Man's Wounds 'Not Life Threatening'
A 35-year-old man has been shot twice in the leg inside a house in Twinbrook on the outskirts of Belfast. A young girl and a woman were in the house in the Summerhill Drive area when the attack happened on Wednesday night. However, it is not believed that the man's injuries are life threatening.

Portrush Stab Accused Faces Attempted Murder Charge
An attempted murder charge has followed a serious incident in Portrush when a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital after being attacked. He was stabbed a number of times during the incident in the Crocknamack Street area on Saturday night.

Belfast man pleads guilty to attempted murder charge
A Belfast man charged with attempted murder has pleaded guilty at court today. Gerard Donegan last week apologised for attacking Maurice McCracken in March 2003 with a hammer. The resulting injuries left the 56-year-old man severely brain damaged and unable to walk.
