Firebomb intercepted en route to Belfast city centre

Two men were forced to drive a large incendiary firebomb through Belfast on Friday before it was abandoned at a security checkpoint.

The workmen’s white Transit van was hi-jacked near a shop in the Grosvenor Road area of the city around 11.30am before the device was put on board.

The driver and his workmate were told to drive the van along the road until they managed to raise the alarm at a police checkpoint at Grosvenor roundabout.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out two controlled explosions on the van. A police spokesperson said the device had the potential to cause huge damage.

The incident caused major disruption to Belfast city centre and traffic disruptions were place for most of Friday. Areas most affected were the busy Westlink area of Belfast and on the M1 motorway.

Meanwhile, another security alert on Wellington Place caused traffic disruption a short time later on Friday. Shops and offices were evacuated, but the alert was later declared a hoax.
