Major facelift to act as catalyst for Omagh

The Minister for Social Development Nigel Dodds has unveiled a £600,000 facelift plan for the Churches area of Omagh town centre.

Designed to improve the appearance and relieve traffic congestion in the area, the major environmental improvement scheme will include the laying of new pavements, the planting of 27 semi-mature trees and the provision of new street lighting.

The Department for Social Development contributed £415,000 with Roads Service and Omagh District Council each providing £100,000.

The Minister said: “All of us are acutely aware of the difficulties Omagh has faced over these last three years. I am full of admiration for the efforts of Omagh District Council and the Omagh 2010 Taskforce in developing a vision document for the development of the town centre.

“My Department is committed to continue working in partnership with all the interested parties in order to achieve the overall strategy for the regeneration of the town. I am aware of the sterling work that has been done by many people to bring the town to where it is today. “The Churches area of Omagh is unique in having fine churches representing four denominations situated so closely to each other. This scheme has enhanced their setting and will, I believe, act as a catalyst for the continued regeneration of Omagh.”
