Two men remanded on kidnap charges

A Belfast man has been remanded in custody on charges connected to a kidnap and blackmail attempt last week.

John Sullivan, 27, from Lisvarna Place, Belfast appeared before Lisburn Magistrate's Court on Monday April 29 accused of kidnapping a man and blackmailing his father.

The charges follow an incident when five armed men kidnapped a 22-year-old man in County Down and ordered his father, who works for a security delivery company, to deliver a substantial sum of money in ransom.

The hostage was released and the money recovered after a 16-hour undercover police operation.

Mr Sullivan was remanded in custody until 21 May.

Meanwhile in Newtownards Magistrates Court Daniel Thompson O’Rawe of Muskett Road has been charged with assisting Mr Sullivan. It was alleged that Mr O’Rawe prevented Mr Sullivan from being apprehended by removing number plates.

He was also remanded in custody.
