Former RUC Man Shot Dead In His South African Bar
An NI man who served in the RUC during some of the worst periods of The Troubles has been killed in a bar shooting abroad.
Richard Smyth, from Belfast, was gunned down last month alongside his 21-year-old colleague, the manager Christopher Patton.
They were killed by three men who had previously been drinking in their bar in South Africa.
Police said the two men were shot repeatedly at close range by the trio, who then casually walked out of the Corner House Pub in Olivedale near Cape Town.
The divorced father-of-two moved out to South Africa in the late 1980s and worked in various jobs before buying the Corner House Pub four years ago.
The Irish-themed bar in the north of the city promised customers 'Cead Mile Failte' - one hundred thousand welcomes - live music, cocktails and Irish nights with Irish stew and barbecues.
The bar hasn't been re-opened since the double murder.
Richard, a former RUC reservist, is due to be cremated next Wednesday, three weeks after the murder, and his ashes spread in Johannesburg and back home in Belfast.
