Two pipe bombs defused in Randalstown
Two pipe bombs left in Randalstown have been made safe by Army bomb experts in County Antrim.
The first alert was raised at 6.30am on Wednesday May 1 when a council worker found a suspicious object outside a bar in Main Street. The man brought it to the police station where Army bomb officers carried out a controlled explosion.
A second suspicious object was discovered an hour later in Moore’s Lane, close to the gates of an old people’s home.
Army bomb disposal officers were again called and a controlled explosion was carried out. Further examination revealed this to be a “viable explosive device”.
The areas around both incidents have since been re-opened.
The police have condemned the incidents, saying they caused considerable disruption to the local community and posed a substantial risk to life and property. (AMcE)
