Helicopter Rescue Drama On Cave Hill
A young woman provoked a dramatic rescue operation on Belfast's Cave Hill on Saturday after becoming distressed and falling.
Details are only now emerging about the female victim, who is in her 30s. She was pinpointed by other hill walkers who said they helped to direct in a police helicopter crew, who in turn co-ordinated her being rescued and taken to hospital.
A PSNI spokesman told 4ni.co.uk that police were called to an incident at Cave Hill around 2pm. As part of the subsequent search operation for a female, police requested air support from the PSNI helicopter, he explained.
The victim was later located in a distressed state in part of the scenic parklands, on the Belfast Castle side of the Cave Hill.
She had sustained a leg injury in the incident
The police statement went on to say that once she was found, she was taken off the hill and sent to the Mater Hospital in north Belfast for treatment.
The police spokesman said that the victim's injuries weren't believed to be serious.
According to a personal posting on the website flickr.com, the rescue helicopter was hovering at low level, searching for the injured woman.
The posting said the woman had called police after becoming distressed and falling.
"We found her and called the police ourselves, then waved it in."
