Father cleared of baby daughter’s murder

A man accused of murdering his baby daughter has been found not guilty by a jury at Craigavon Crown Court.

Paul Owens, 29, originally from Shrewsbury denied killing his 14-week-old daughter Jasmine McGowan at their home in Twinbrook on the outskirts of Belfast in August 1999.

The court heard how Jasmine, who would have been three on Tuesday, died from being shaken and her head had hit off a hard surface.

She had also suffered a forceful blow to the back of the head and had 25 fractures to her ribs.

The jury retired on Tuesday April 30 at Craigavon Crown Court. They returned on Wednesday May 1 and deliberated for two hours before reaching a verdict of not guilty.

Afterwards, Mr Owens said he was relieved to have his reputation vindicated by the jury's decision.

It is understood that the baby's mother was not in court to hear the verdict.
