Man Rescued From Bangor Blaze

There were two serious fires overnight, in one of which a firefighter was injured, while another saw a resident having to be rescued from his home.

The fireman was hurt while tackling a blaze in Co Londonderry.

The fire was at a bungalow on Gullnaduff Road in Maghera during the early hours of Wednesday and saw the premises being destroyed. According to the Station Commander at Cookstown, Mark Watson, the officer hurt his leg during the intense fire.

"He injured his ankle and was taken to hospital for a precautionary check up but he has been released now."

Meanwhile, the man was rescued from a house fire in Co Down.

The blaze started accidentally in a first floor bedroom of a house in Central Avenue, Bangor.

The man was uninjured, but five other people escaped from the building, with one of them needed treatment for smoke inhalation.

Two fires at a derelict factory in Co Tyrone are being treat as arson. The first blaze started at Herdman's Mill in Sion Mills on Friday, 10 June, which caused substantial damage. Smoking Is Biggest Cause Of Accidental Fire Deaths In NI
Smoking is the biggest cause of accidental fire deaths in Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). There have been 53 accidental fire deaths over the past five years and 22 of these were as a direct result of smoking materials.

Blaze Dramas Unfold
An investigation is being carried out to establish the cause of the three fires, including one where pensioners had to be evacuated from their homes - as well as a petrol bomb attack. A row of terraced houses under construction at Milltown Street in Dungannon sustained extensive damage in the fire which was reported at 7.10am on Saturday.

NIFRS Warning Over Chimney Fires
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is reminding the public of the dangers of chimney fires, after it attended 1,762 such fires last year, representing just over 7% of all incidents in 2013. Chimney Fire Safety Week begins today, and the NIFRS is reminding the public to ensure chimneys are swept and cleaned regularly.
