News team may face contempt of court charges

Two journalists have flouted an order by the Bloody Sunday inquiry to reveal the names of four soldiers interviewed anonymously by Channel 4 news.

Former Channel 4 producer Lena Ferguson and presenter Alex Thomson were instructed by the Saville inquiry to produce the names of the soldiers interviewed or face a charge of contempt of court if they failed to do so.

The possible charge concerns a series of reports the news team produced for Channel 4 news. The items included interviews with former soldiers which had been conducted under the condition that their names would not be revealed.

The issue is likely to be brought before the High Court in Belfast and if the journalists refuse to surrender the names then they could face a prison term.

During the Inquiry proceedings on Tuesday, Lord Saville asked for notes taken during the interviews to be handed over to the inquiry. Lord Saville said that the notebooks would contain information pertinent to the inquiry should be produced with details relating to the soldiers' identities obscured.
