Policing Board shortlist three candidates for top job
The Policing Board's selection panel has drawn up a list of three candidates for the top job in the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
The three candidates for the post of Chief Constable are Assistant Chief Constables Albiston and McQuillan of the PSNI, and Deputy Assistant Commissioner Orde, Metropolitan Police.
It was also confirmed that a fourth candidate, Maria Wallis, currently Deputy Chief Constable with the Sussex Constabulary, withdrew her application on Thursday following her appointment to the post of Chief Constable in Devon and Cornwall.
Speaking about the process, Chairman of the Board, Professor Desmond Rea, said: “The appointment of a new Chief Constable will be on the basis of merit in respect of the candidate’s capability to undertake successfully the duties of the post set against a number of pre-agreed key criteria.
“Candidates will be asked to display a range of key competences developed through their experience of operational and community policing, policy, planning and resource management at Chief Officer level and to have displayed the capacity for leadership and vision essential to the demands of the post.
“We are naturally disappointed that DCC Wallis has withdrawn her application but would wish to thank her for her interest and wish her every success in her new post.”
Candidates must have served at Chief Officer level for two years in a Police Service with a substantial complement of officers. Candidates must have successfully completed either the Strategic Command Course, the Senior Command Course, the Strategic Leadership development Programme of the Chief Police Officers’ Course including the successful completion of the Extended Interview Process for entrance to these courses or a course declared by Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary to be of equivalent standing.
The assessment centre will be held week commencing 13th May 2002 with interviews week commencing 27th May 2002.
The appointment of the Chief Constable, which is subject to the approval of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland will be for a fixed term, and will not be for less than four years.
In accordance with nationally agreed pay scales, the salary of the Chief Constable is between £122,000 to just under £132,000.

Almost 5,500 Applications To PSNI
A total of 5,498 applications were received during the PSNI recruitment drive from the end of September to 23 October. In figures released by the PSNI, it was revealed that of the more than 5,000 applicants 65% were Protestant, 31.8% were Catholic – a 2% increase on 2014's recruitment period. 64% of applicants were male and 35.6% female.

'Marginal' Rise In Latest Crime Statistics
A total number of 98,301 crimes were recorded in 2017/18, according to the latest annual statistics published by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The new figures represent a marginal rise of 0.3% crimes on the previous year 98,041 but remain the second lowest total recorded since 1998/99.

Man Arrested Over PSNI Car Bomb
A third man has been arrested as detectives continue an investigation into the attempted murder of a police officer. A 25 and a 34-year-old man were held in Belfast on Monday. A 41-year-old was arrested in west Belfast on Tuesday. The investigation follows the placing of a bomb under a police officer's car.
